Protobothrops mucrosquamatus, commonly known as brown spotted pit viper, is a common snake species found in Taiwan's low-altitude mountainous areas. Although it is highly aggressive and venomous, it is one of the few snakes with egg protecting behaviour. The spawning sites of snakes are often quite secluded. They usually lay their eggs in narrow crevices, caves or tree hollows, but sometimes they choose artificial water pipe holes on the mountain walls as spawning sites. The number of eggs in a nest of a brown spotted pit viper usually ranges from 3 to 24. After the eggs are laid, the female snake will continue to stay by the eggs. The baby snake would hatch after 30 to 60 days, and only then the female snake would leave.
